NYC Extended Certification Programs: Fall 2025

Description

The NYC Extended Certification Program enables qualified, current NYC Public Schools or CBO teachers to pursue additional certifications or extensions through the completion of tuition-free graduate-level coursework. 

For the 25-26 school year, we will offer...

  1. An SwD certification for teachers who already have a bilingual extension,
  2. A Bilingual Extension for teachers who already have an SwD certification, OR
  3. A Bilingual extension for teachers at a school on the NYCPS approved bilingual list.

To be eligible, you must...

  • Possess an active Initial or Professional teaching certificate issued by NYSED and valid through August 2026,
  • Have completed a degree in education,
  • Be a current lead teacher of record in an NYCPS or CBO classroom,
  • Provide a transcript for review of prerequisite courses, AND
  • Commit to work in your new license at your current school for two years after completion of this program. 
    • For options #1 and #2 above, you will need to agree to be staffed in a bilingual Special Education position from September 2026 through June 2028.

Candidates seeking a bilingual extension must also be fluent and literate in a language other than English that matches the home language of bilingual students at your school. Our CUNY partner can support the languages Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Haitian Creole, Italian, Bengali and possibly others.

Candidates are ineligible if they...

  • Are currently enrolled in an alternative certification program (e.g., NYC Teaching Fellows or NYC Teaching Collaborative), 
  • Have only Trans-B or COVID Emergency certification,
  • Already have at least 6 credits toward your target extension or certification, 
  • Are currently enrolled in coursework with a college or university, OR
  • Are seeking a bilingual extension on an ENL or World Languages base certificate.

Application Process

  • Discuss this opportunity with your principal and ensure they are on board with the classroom requirements. 
  • Submit this Preliminary Application so that NYCPS can assess your basic eligibility.
  • If you receive a conditional offer, you and your principal will be asked to read and e-sign a commitment form.
  • Then, you will be invited to apply to our CUNY partner, and that university will determine your final eligibility and invite you to enroll.
