Description

The application for the Fall 2026 cohort is open from April 1 until June 1 at 11:59pm.

The NYC Extended Certification Program enables qualified, current NYC Public Schools or CBO educators to pursue additional certifications or extensions through the completion of tuition-free virtual graduate-level coursework. 

For the Fall 2026 cohort, we will offer...

  1. An SwD certification for teachers who already have a bilingual extension,
  2. A bilingual extension for speech language pathologists and teachers who already have an SwD certification, 
  3. A bilingual extension for teachers, school psychologists, school social workers, and guidance counselors at a school on the NYCPS approved bilingual list.

To be eligible, you must...

  • Possess an active Initial or Professional certificate issued by NYSED and valid through August 2027,
  • Have completed a degree in education,
  • Be currently staffed at an NYCPS school or CBO,
  • Provide a transcript for review of prerequisite courses, AND
  • Commit to serve bilingual students at your current school for two years after completion of this program. 
    • For options #1 and #2 above, you will agree to teach bilingual Special Education students from September 2027 through June 2029.

Candidates seeking a bilingual extension must also be fluent and literate in a language other than English that matches the home language of bilingual students at your school.

Candidates are ineligible if they...

  • Are currently enrolled in an alternative certification program (e.g., NYC Teaching Fellows or NYC Teaching Collaborative), 
  • Have only Trans-B, COVID Emergency, or internship certification, OR
  • Are currently enrolled in coursework with a college or university,.

Application Process

  • Discuss this opportunity with your principal and ensure they are on board with the classroom requirements. 
  • Submit this Preliminary Application so that NYCPS can assess your basic eligibility.
  • If you receive a conditional offer, you and your principal will be asked to read and e-sign a commitment form.
  • Then, you will be invited to apply to our CUNY partner, and that university will determine your final eligibility and invite you to enroll.
